Doctor Who: The Web Of Queer
Ep 029: Think Of The Children

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Sarah Jane Adventures episode Death of the Doctor and discuss whether some topics are suitable for children to see on TV.

In Death of the Doctor we compare continuity between the spinoff and the main show, revel in nostalgic references, assess thematic vulture aliens, and once again mock U.N.I.T.'s inability to be a covert operation.

In our Think of the Children discussion we talk about some complex situations that the world of Doctor Who can bring up, how children might react to them, and how they can help families have conversations about difficult subjects.

In this week’s Loose Thread, we jump across the Atlantic to review “Running for Honor”, an episode of the American time travel show, Quantum Leap.  We discussed the show's premise, and how it was used to explore homophobia in the military during the 1960s, as well as contemporary 1990s attitudes.

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Eleventh Doctor story Closing Time, and then have a discussion on the status of queer rights in the 60s and whether that influenced the show.

For Closing Time, we talk about The Doctor and Craig’s relationship, both how they perceive it and the assumptions that are made by those around them. How does the writing subvert tropes that we are used to seeing? And how many times can someone change their mind about a story?

In our discussion, we examine attitudes and laws regarding queer people at the time the show was just beginning. What kind of influences would have been around the people creating it? What queer BBC characters were around at that time, and what did it feel like to grow up in that era?
