Doctor Who: The Web Of Queer
Ep 034: Punky and the Brain

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the new ninth series episode The Magician’s Apprentice, and follow with a review of the classic The Brain of Morbius.

In our The Magician's Apprentice review, we discuss how awesome Missy is. A few dropped mentions grabbed out attention too. The doctor as a little girl? Did Clara have a snog with Jane Austin? And Missy gives Clara a talking to about heteronormativity. Or does she?

In our The Brain of Morbius review, we share our opinions on classic horror style Who, discuss Sarah Jane’s initiative, how the Sisterhood factored into the New Who we had seen (before The Magician’s Apprentice) and discuss the possibilities born from the mind battle. Plus Ian gets his theory brain into gear, and connects a bunch of dots.

Ep 033: Newphoria

On this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Tenth Doctor story New Earth, and discuss the portrayal of gender dysphoria in science fiction/fantasy.

In our New Earth review we see the return of Cassandra and the Face of Boe. How did we think this story handled the topics it tried to cover? What did we think of the "science" we saw? Why does Mikayla have a particular grudge against this story?

For our gender dysphoria discussion we talk about what gender dysphoria is and why it should be a familiar concept to fans of science fiction. But how often is it overlooked, and why? Are aliens being used as a metaphor instead? And what are the possibilities if gender dysphoria is explored rather than ignored?

Ep 032: All About That Ace

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Seventh Doctor story Battlefield, and discuss the differences between asexual representation compared to characters without a defined sexuality.

In our Battlefield discussion, after pouring over the nostalgia-fest, we discuss how the King Arthur legend was written into the story. Does the Doctor make a convincing Merlin? What do we thing of the Ace/Cho pairing? And how well does the Brig jump back into his old role, after such a long time away?

In the second part, we discuss the differences between characters without a sexuality shown on screen compared to characters that are asexual. How does representation in media impact the ways we talk about asexuality? Why can't we just decide every undefined character is asexual? Where are all the ace characters?

In our last Pieces of Eight episode of the year we review the Big Finish story Human Resources Part 2. We discussed the resolution of the cliffhanger and how we thought the arc of the story progressed throughout the series. What did we think of the Time Lords' role in the story? Are we eager to continue with Eighth Doctor audios?

Ep 031: Eyebrows From Space

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Third Doctor story Spearhead From Space.

How much influence has this regeneration story had on future ones? What do we think of the Liz Shaw and Brigadier team? And what creeped us out more than the alien invaders?

Ep 030: Kiss Kiss Bi Pan

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Torchwood story Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and discuss the trope of the greedy bisexual.

In Kiss Kiss Bang Bang we talk about the group dynamics between the team, both professional and personal. What relationships are progressing, which ones are stopping, and why? What was the Time Agency really like and how does John Hart’s arrival stir the pot?

In our discussion we tackle the media’s portrayal of fictional bisexuals and pansexuals, and what impact that has for people in the real world. What do Jack, John and Ianto’s stories tell an audience? What stereotypes might they be reinforcing? And how do stereotypes affect bisexual and pansexual people's lives?

Ep 029: Think Of The Children

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Sarah Jane Adventures episode Death of the Doctor and discuss whether some topics are suitable for children to see on TV.

In Death of the Doctor we compare continuity between the spinoff and the main show, revel in nostalgic references, assess thematic vulture aliens, and once again mock U.N.I.T.'s inability to be a covert operation.

In our Think of the Children discussion we talk about some complex situations that the world of Doctor Who can bring up, how children might react to them, and how they can help families have conversations about difficult subjects.

In this week’s Loose Thread, we jump across the Atlantic to review “Running for Honor”, an episode of the American time travel show, Quantum Leap.  We discussed the show's premise, and how it was used to explore homophobia in the military during the 1960s, as well as contemporary 1990s attitudes.

In this episode of The Web of Queer we review the Eleventh Doctor story Closing Time, and then have a discussion on the status of queer rights in the 60s and whether that influenced the show.

For Closing Time, we talk about The Doctor and Craig’s relationship, both how they perceive it and the assumptions that are made by those around them. How does the writing subvert tropes that we are used to seeing? And how many times can someone change their mind about a story?

In our discussion, we examine attitudes and laws regarding queer people at the time the show was just beginning. What kind of influences would have been around the people creating it? What queer BBC characters were around at that time, and what did it feel like to grow up in that era?
